Convalescent Care Units For Barred Owls!? |

View My Eagle Project Notebook |
Ok, you're probably saying to yourself, either "What is a Convalescent Care Unit?" or "Why would anyone, in their right mind, want to build one?" Well, in my long and toilsome journey towards my Eagle in B.S.A., I talked to the Florida Audubon Society, and was informed that the portable dog kennels, in which the Barred Owls were kept until they could be released into the wild, just weren't doing the trick. It seemed that the birds were grabbing onto the wire grate at the front of the kennel and flapping their wings, thus damaging their primary feathers delaying their release. Subsequently, I undertook the job of designing and constructing these first-in-the-world C.C.U.'s for Barred owls. It is because I could find nearly nothing on the Web about this topic that I have decided to add this page to my site. For those other Audubon Chapters out there in need of a good design for cages, here is what I built, and with just a few minor changes to the design, they can be made to work for most any type of bird that you may be housing. Here are the individual aspects of my Project for your viewing pleasure. |
